Rumination kills

midsummer is tired       wearing t-shirts
but thinking about bringing a jacket
Cheapside is dark and unlit after six
shame feels like concrete       cold to the
touch and impenetrable       not alleviated
by any amount of scrolling outside on street
corners where nobody knows your face
but even bright headlights turned up to the
nines won’t blind you to what’s obvious
right in front of you, clear as day       and
that’s what’s so embarrassing       the
grossness and futility of it all       less than
worthwhile but still a virus bursting nuclei
in every cell that makes up your mind
no umbrella is strong enough when the
drops rise from the ground       dew shaking
in neon searchlight and the vibration
of sympathy you shouldn’t want       cliff
diving as perspiration and evaporating
perfume       then the wind is cold and you
ask       why don’t i like myself       and it’s
clear
